GOLD ORES SEPARATION PROCESS

Gold ores typically exhibit specific gravity values between 2.5 and 3.2 g/cm³, with mineralization occurring in a variety of host rocks such as quartz veins, sulfide-rich hydrothermal veins and oxide caps. Ore types range from rock and alluvial gold to free-gold nuggets and grains in placer deposits to refractory sulfide-associated ores containing pyrite, arsenopyrite and tellurides.
In practice, gold is used in jewelry, electronics (for corrosion-free electrical contacts), dentistry and aerospace components. The beneficiation challenge lies in efficiently liberating both coarse (>0.5 mm) and fine (<200 µm) gold particles while maintaining high recovery and minimizing environmental impact through controlled tailings management and cyanide detoxification.

In a typical gold ore beneficiation circuit, the ore is first crushed to 10–20 mm and then ground to liberate gold minerals.
The ground pulp enters gravity separation, where shaking tables or jigs concentrate coarse and free gold (>0.5 mm).
The gravity tailings feed a flotation stage, using collectors and frothers to recover sulfide-associated fine gold particles.
Concentrates from flotation undergo thickening to reduce water content (<25 %), followed by leaching (cyanidation) to dissolve precious metals.
Finally, the solution is subjected to smelting or electrowinning to produce doré bars.
