PLATINUM ORES SEPARATION PROCESS

Platinum ores generally exhibit a specific gravity between 5.0 and 7.5 g/cm³, with mineralization hosted in mafic-ultramafic intrusions and placer deposits. Ore types range from sulfide-associated refractory ores—containing pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite—to placer-derived platinum group element (PGE) nuggets.
The main challenges in platinum beneficiation include the fine liberation of PGE-bearing minerals (<75 µm), complex sulfide matrices, and the need for selective recovery to minimize nickel and copper impurities. Platinum is vital in automotive catalytic converters, chemical catalysts, and electronic components, demanding high-purity outputs and stringent environmental tailings control.
Platinum Ore Process Flow Diagarm
MINERAL PROCESS——PLATINUM ORE PROCESS FLOW DIAGARM
In a standard platinum beneficiation circuit, ore is first crushed to 10–15 mm and then ground to a P80 of ~75 µm to liberate PGE minerals.
The slurry undergoes gravity separation using shaking tables or Falcon centrifugal concentrators to recover coarse PGE–sulfide particles.
Gravity tailings proceed to flotation, where selective collectors target PGE-bearing sulfides while depressing nickel and copper minerals.
The rougher concentrate is re-ground and passed through cleaner flotation stages to upgrade PGE grades.
Final smelting & refining produces high-purity platinum ingots.
